Module 2 — Pre-work
- Worker Self-Care: The FM/DD should ensure the supervisor meets with each member of the supervisor’s unit and coaches the workers in developing their own Self-Care plans. The supervisor should review, negotiate, approve, and help their workers remain committed to their plans. The FM/DD should review, at a minimum, one worker’s Self-Care plan.

- Review the Field Observation Assessment (FOA): Field Managers/District Directors should introduce the FOA to the supervisor and explain the purpose—answer any questions the supervisor may have.
Module 2 — Classroom Training — 3 Days
Day 1-2 — Coaching
Competency
As a result of this training, participants will be able to identify and discuss engagement, motivation and coaching skills as part of the essential capabilities of a Child Welfare supervisor.

- Engage in active listening, mutual problem solving, feedback, seeking ideas of others, building relationships all in order to achieve learning and development goals.
- Engages child welfare staff in change processes through motivational interviewing.
- Identify the core competencies of supervision and explain how these competencies and core concepts of supervision reflect excellent coaching strategies including six key skills for effective coaching.
- Describe the differences between managing and coaching.
- List and identify at least five benefits of coaching and five benefits of including coaching in their supervisory practice.
- Demonstrate key skills of coaching such as overcoming resistance, developing SMART goals, enhancing reflection and absorbing confrontation.

Module 2 — Post-work
- Revisit the FOA: FM/DD explains the evaluation of skills completed during the FOA. The FM/DD schedules a time to conduct the assessment using the FOA with the supervisor.
- New Worker Certification: Review the existing grading tools and protocol for New Worker Certification with Supervisor. The discussion should include the New Worker Certification Handbook for Supervisors, the grading tools provided by the Training Unit, and the process for a new worker to become certified. FM/DD should assist the supervisor in identifying workers within their unit and where each worker is in the certification process.
- Conduct a Community Meeting: Remember, this task should take no longer than 10-15 minutes.
- Identify Leadership Strategy: Supervisors will identify their Leadership Strategy(ies) during Module 2. (Friendliness, Bargaining, Reasoning, Assertiveness, Higher Authority, Coalition Building) FM/DDs will review the Leadership Strategies, identify what their primary strategy is and discuss with the supervisor. The discussion should include a conversation about how you complement each other and the best way to work together.
